CANADIAN ADMIRAL TALKS ABOUT NEW NUKE/DIESEL RUSSIAN SUB - David ...
The maritime defence conference recently organized by MARPAC was quite educational. There were a lot of speakers from various navies at the September conference and, as a result, a lot of information overload. I’ve reported on a few of the items that were raised at the conference including the issue of China’s increasing submarine fleet. But yesterday MARPAC made public the full transcripts and/or power-point presentations of those officers and analysts who presented at the conference. It’s a treasure-trove for navy watchers. Admiral Tyrone Pile (Commander Maritime Forces Pacific): “Reports out of Moscow refer to the “near collapse” in Russian arms exports to China. Instead, the Russians, awash in oil revenues and frustrated by the neutered state of their navy in the 1990s, have begun to focus more and more of their attention on revitalizing their own seagoing force. This revitalization process is examined in detail in the Naval Update Panel this afternoon. Submarines have long been the jewel in the crown in the Russian Navy and in keeping with that priority they have just launched the Yury Dolgoruky, a 500 foot, 29 knot, fourth generation SSBN equipped with 16 ballistic missiles. At the same time they are hard at work completing two other Borey-class nuclear boats—the Alexander Nevsky and the Vladimir Monomakh. Still further, the Russians are reported to have constructed a submarine, the B-90 Sarov, that employs a nuclear reactor as an auxiliary propulsion system on a diesel submarine.” It’s probably old news for those in the sub community but I found the idea of a nuke reactor as a backup propulsion system for diesel boats quite interesting. I would imagine that there is potential for under-ice operations. The B-90 Sarov was officially handed over in the summer to the Russian Northern Fleet. The vessel was built by the Sevmash yard in Severodvinsk, Arkhangelsk Oblast, according to Russian news reports. The sub was put on the water in December last year, and has since undergone testing, the Northern Fleet press service reports.
